How To Learn The Mental Game Of Golf: Minding Your Game

Mental Game of Golf

For many of us golfers, there is a missing ingredient to our game; the mental game of golf. For some reason, probably because the subject is intangible, we tend to neglect golf mental techniques or we don’t understand them. It is, however, a very important aspect of the game of golf. It is the one area that separates the professional golfers from the amateurs.

It is the one reason that the average score has not dropped more than 1 stroke in the last 25 years! Even with the far superior golf clubs and balls that are supposed to make it easy to blast our drives straight down the fairway; even with access to online golf instructional DVD’s and golf swing e-books; and even with golf lessons incorporating slow-motion video replay of our swing; not to mention the hundreds of golf swing training aids at our disposal.

The answer to improvement is obviously in the inner game of golf. Most golfers accept the golf mental aspect of the game, but not many know how to implement it. Sure, we all know that we should stay focused and concentrate on the shot at hand, but the mental game of golf is a lot more complex then that. Just as we need help with our golf swing, we also need help on how to use the mental golf game to play the best golf that we are capable of.

To Learn the Mental Game Of Golf You Need Mental Golf Coaches

With this in mind, I studied the material from several mental golf coaches. The first one that I looked at was the Minding Your Game coaching program by Wade Pearse. The first thing I look at with any golfing guide or program is to check to see if the author is qualified to give the advice or instruction.

Wade Pearse

In the case of Wade I saw that he has 9 years experience as a peak performance coach and that secondly he is an avid golfer. The next thing you will notice about him is his story – he was an average golfer that struggled to break 90 so he developed, over 10 years, his mental techniques that has enabled him to now shoot consistently in the low 70’s. He says he is passionate about golf and helping other golfers reach their full potential with his new golf program.

Once you accept that golf IS a mental game, then you should look for some guidance to learning the techniques. This is what Wade’s program does, in a way that is easy to grasp and implement. In fact, after going through his program you will have control of your mind and, amazingly, it will feel as natural as breathing.

With this mental game improving program you will:

  • Play under pressure as calmly as you do in casual rounds
  • Have complete mental focus, toughness and control
  • Learn how to dissolve anger and replace it with inner calm
  • Drastically improve your accuracy and consistency
  • Shoot the absolute lowest scores you are capable of

Analysis Paralysis’ in Golfers Confirmed by Study

Chi Chi Rodriguez has long lamented his poor putting. “If I could putt, you would’ve never heard of Arnold Palmer,” he’s been known to say. But Rodriguez wasn’t always a poor putter. There was a time in his early career, he once told me, that he was a great putter. What happened?

“I never knew what I did putting,” Rodriguez said. “I just knew that there was a hole, there was a ball, there was a putter, I was supposed to knock the ball in the hole. (But then) a magazine paid me $50 to figure out what I did putting, and I haven’t putted good since.”

Ah, yes: Overthinking. Analysis paralysis. Read More…
